Advantages of Using Cedar for Exterior Outdoor Signs

BENEFITS OF CEDAR FOR EXTERIOR-OUTDOOR SIGNS
The natural tanins in Western Red cedar plank give cedar exceptional mildew and rot resistant properties -- ideal for historic home signs, exterior house-mounted or double-sided hanging signs in the most demanding enviornments like in New England or coastal areas.

The finest reproduction wood shutters are made from Western Red Cedar -- the wood of choice for long-lasting and historically-accurate needs. Note: In our Sign Blog, we compare cedar versus MDO board for exterior signs.

Only Cedar Plank for Our Historic Signs

We use only 5/4" thick Western Red Cedar, personally selected by us at our local cedar mill. We select the finest vertical grain cedar plank, as seen in the photo taken by us upon return from the cedar mill before we rip it down into sign board lengths. This plank is 10-inch wide cedar and will be transformed into cedar sign plaques 9-inches height and various widths. The vertical grain runs horizontal on these cedar sign plaques, making a nice surface for hand lettering the custom sign text.

The unprimed sign board seen at left was eventually primed with high quality oil-based wood primer, two coats of top quality exterior paint hand painted with a brush and hand lettered with black enamel lettering paint by a skilled lettering artist. Finally the surface is sealed with a clear UV-protecting coating that seals the surface from moisture for decades.
